Florida Orthodontic Associates Myth vs. Fact
It’s a good idea to start bringing your child for a regular orthodontic screening appointments starting from the age of 7-8. Many issues that could prove difficult to fix later, are easily intercepted and corrected at this age. Children are growing so rapidly, they can benefit enormously from an early phase of orthodontic treatment by taking advantage of this valuable widow of opportunity in their development.
MYTH: My dentist is also an orthodontist; they are the same thing.
FACT: Becoming an orthodontist requires additional (typically two or three) years of training and education past dental school. Much like your family doctor would send you to a cardiologist for specialized treatment, an orthodontist is a specialist in aligning jaws, straightening teeth and monitoring dentofacial growth.
MYTH: I’m not a kid, I am too old for braces.
FACT: Nationwide, one fifth of all orthodontic patients are adults. There are great options like tooth colored braces and clear aligners (Invisalign) for those that don't want to wear traditional metal braces.
MYTH: Braces hurt!
FACT: Just like when you get a new pair of shoes, there is a period of time that it takes to break them in. Your lips and teeth have to adjust. After adjusted, braces are very comfortable. Invisalign treatment includes smooth, comfortable trays custom-made for your mouth and move your teeth with micro-adjustments each week - thus reducing any discomfort.
MYTH: It can take several years to get a result from braces.
FACT: Depending on what is needed to create your ideal smile, braces can be worn for as little as a few months, to as long as a few years. Every case is different. Invisalign braces are clear and any visible results show at all times.
MYTH: I need a referral from my dentist or physician to see an orthodontist.
FACT: You do not need a referral. While we do appreciate referrals from our local dentists, we would love to see you in our office without a referral. If you need dental work to be done before you can begin treatment with us, we will send you to your dentist for a check-up.
MYTH: I have a nickel allergy; I can’t get braces.
FACT: If you have had a reaction to costume jewelry before, you may not be allergic to the metal in traditional braces. We can test you to make sure. We also have braces and wires in stock that are 100% nickel free (latex free, organic, fair trade, and gluten free options as well!). Invisalign treatment uses a BPA-free plastic tray and no metal at all.
MYTH: When I go to the airport, I will set off the metal detector if I wear braces.
FACT: You may set off the metal detector, but it will not be because of your braces. The materials used in braces are not magnetic, and the amount of metal in braces isn't enough to sound the alarm.
MYTH: I am going to a middle school dance tonight, and my girlfriend/boyfriend also has traditional braces, will they lock up?
FACT: Contrary to popular belief and Hollywood myth, your braces will not lock up!
MYTH: Braces can be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
FACT: This technology is not yet available.
